It is difficult to determine the market size for a specific product in a specific country. How to value the import, export and produced chairs in a certain period is one of the questions one has to ask before trying to calculate the size of a market. It’s even more difficult to compare the market size of different countries, simply because the calculations could be based on different methods.
Every now and then, OfficeRepublic recieves and email with questions about market sizes, turnovers of specific companies and other information. Until now we could not answer those questions. This month, the FEMB published a report based on Eurostat-statistics with information about several product groups. We analysed the information and were able to calculate the market size for several product groups for 27 countries in the European Union.
This post is the first in a series of publications about market sizes in Europe concerning office furniture.
THe Eurostat information
FEMB collects data from European statistics agency Eurostat
Their report contains three product groups:
- Swivel Chairs
- Wooden office furniture
- Metal office furniture
For each group following data is published, per country
- Exportvalue
- Importvalue
- Production quantity
- Production Value
Based on those information, the market size of a specific country can be determined.
The Netherlands has a market size for swivel chairs of € 64,8 mln:
- Production value NL (21,7 mln) + Import value (76,5 mln) – Export Value (33,4 mln) = Market size (64,8 mln)
Using this method for all contries in the femb-report results in following map
Market size office swivel chairs in the EU-27 countries in 2016 | EUROSTAT/FEMB
Notes
- Not all countries are completely represented in the EUROSTAT database. Mostly because the production value in the country is unknown, or undiscosed. Those countries are blanked out in the map.
- Total market size for the European Union in 2016 based on the same calculation method : € 1,72 miljard
